Military schools sweep final honors of indoor season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – VMI’s Jordin Poindexter and The Citadel’s Sam Blumer have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while the Keydets’ Ahliyah Williams and McKenna Dunn earned the honors on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included competition held Feb. 22. They are the final weekly awards of the indoor season.

All four winners competed at the USC Indoor Open in Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday.

VMI’s Poindexter ran in the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. The sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, turned in a time of 6.95 seconds in the 60-meter dash to finish ninth and match his second-fastest time this season. Later in the day, Poindexter finished 13th in the 200-meter dash in 22.00 seconds, just 0.01 seconds off his season-best time. Poindexter is third on the SoCon performance list in the 60-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash this season.

The Citadel’s Blumer claimed his second weekly award of the season after winning the pole vault at the USC Indoor Open. The junior from Greenville, South Carolina, set a program record with his height of 5.00 meters (16 feet, 4 3/4 inches), which also extended his lead atop the SoCon performance list.

VMI’s Williams ran a pair of indoor lifetime bests at the USC Indoor Open, competing in the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. Starting her day in the 400-meter dash, the sophomore from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, ran a time of 57.81 seconds, good for 17th in the event and sixth on the SoCon performance list this season. Later in the day, she clocked 25.95 seconds in the 200-meter dash to finish 25th.

VMI’s Dunn tied for 11th in the pole vault at the USC Indoor Open, clearing a height of 3.37 meters (11 feet, 3/4 inch). The sophomore from Midlothian, Virginia, is tied for sixth on the SoCon performance list this season with her effort of 3.50 meters (11 feet, 5 3/4 inches) at the VMI Team Challenge in January.

The league teams now turn their attention to the SoCon Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Championships, which will take place at VMI’s Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington, Virginia, on Saturday and Sunday.
