Samford claims three of four awards; Furman’s Jennings takes third straight

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Titus Moore and Matt Cahoon have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Furman’s Gabbi Jennings and Samford’s Maggie Johnston earned the honors on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included competition held Feb. 13-15.

Moore competed at the Toyota USATF Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Friday and Saturday. In Friday’s preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles, the sophomore from Macon, Georgia, turned in a time of 7.84 seconds to place 10th and advance to Saturday’s semifinals. There, he posted a time of 7.87 seconds. His preliminary time, converted to 7.86 for altitude, leads the SoCon this season and ranks 36th on the NCAA Division I performance list. The weekly award is his second of the season.

Samford’s Cahoon claimed his third award of the season after an impressive showing in the throws at the Samford Invite and in the high jump at the Samford Bulldog Open. The junior from Cullman, Alabama, threw a personal-best 15.80 meters (51 feet, 10 inches) to take fifth in the shot put on Friday, extending his SoCon lead in the event, and took fourth in the weight throw earlier in the day with a heave of 16.47 meters (54 feet, 1/2 inch). On Saturday, Cahoon leapt 2.00 meters (6 feet, 6 3/4 inches) to finish fourth in the high jump.

Also competing at the Samford Invitational on Friday, Samford’s Johnston earned her second field honor in three weeks with a pair of top-four finishes in the throws. The senior from Macon, Georgia, opened the meet with a fourth-place finish in the weight throw, turning in an effort of 17.21 meters (56 feet, 5 3/4 inches). Later that day, Johnston earned a podium finish in the shot put, heaving the implement an indoor personal-best 14.03 meters (46 feet, 1/2 inch) for third place. That mark is good for third on the SoCon performance list this season.

Furman’s Jennings claimed her third straight weekly track award with another strong performance on the national stage. The senior from Slidell, Louisiana, competed at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington, on Friday, finishing 12th out of 81 women in the 3,000-meter run, an event stacked with collegiate and professional runners and won by Bowerman Track Club’s Emily Infeld in meet-record time. Jennings turned in a personal-best time of 9:11.65, which is second in the SoCon this season and ranks 17th on the NCAA performance list.
