SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Aaron Wier and The Citadel’s Sam Blumer have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Furman’s Gabbi Jennings and Western Carolina’s Rachel Rouse claimed the honors on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included competition held Feb. 7-8.
Furman’s Wier finished eighth in the men’s elite mile at the Camel City Invitational at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Saturday, turning in a converted time of 3:59.38. The senior from Versailles, Kentucky, finished fourth among collegiate competitors in the field. Wier’s time is good for second on the SoCon performance list this season and ranks 14
th on the NCAA Division I performance list.
The Citadel’s Blumer turned in an indoor school record in the pole vault at the South Carolina Invitational in Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday. The junior from Greenville, South Carolina, cleared a height of 4.90 meters (16 feet, 3/4 inches) to take fifth in the event and surpass his own school standard. Blumer also moved into first in the SoCon in the event.
Also competing at the Camel City Invitational, Furman’s Jennings finished fifth overall and second among collegians in the women’s elite mile, turning in a converted time of 4:34.74. Her time eclipsed the school record she set a week ago, tops the SoCon performance list this season and ranks eighth on the NCAA performance list. The weekly award is Jennings’ second straight.
Western Carolina’s Rouse won the shot put at the South Carolina Invitational, turning in a personal-best throw of 14.03 meters (46 feet, 1/2 inch) to surpass her previous best mark by more than half a meter. The senior from Morehead City, North Carolina, moved to No. 2 on the SoCon performance list with her effort.
