SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Jaron Dougherty has been named the Southern Conference women’s basketball player of the week presented by GEICO for games played Feb. 4-10. The award is selected by the league office.

The sophomore forward averaged a double-double on the week, helping Mercer to a pair of wins and collecting her third player of the week honor this season. On Feb. 6, the native of Buford, Georgia, scored 15 points, pulled down nine rebounds and recorded three blocks and a steal in the 54-53 win over the Terriers, which entered the game tied for third in the league standings. She played all 40 minutes and netted 17 points in a 61-55 win over Furman, which also entered the game tied for third in the conference, two days later. Dougherty earned her team-leading ninth double-double of the year against the Paladins as she added 11 rebounds in the victory, helping Mercer to back-to-back wins for just the second time this season and first time in SoCon play in the 2019-20 campaign.

Dougherty is third in the league in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game, and second in league play, averaging 16.1 points per contest.

Mercer (6-18, 3-6 SoCon) concludes a three-game homestand, hosting Samford (11-13, 6-3) on Saturday, Feb. 15, in the Bears’ lone contest this week.
