Furman's Walters named SoCon player of the week

Freshman guard averaged 20 points in pair of road contests

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Tate Walters has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for games played Dec. 1-7 after averaging 20 points in road games at Sun Belt foes Georgia Southern and Georgia State. The award is selected by the league office.

Walters, a freshman, had a coming-out party in the Paladins’ second game of the 2020-21 campaign, a 73-58 loss at Georgia Southern on Dec. 3. After scoring just two points in Furman’s season opener at Clemson on Nov. 25, Walters played 31 minutes and went 9-for-17 (.529) from the field, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line, scoring a game-high 25 points. The Buford, Georgia, native pulled down six rebounds and added a pair of assists and a pair of steals. Three days later, the guard netted 15 points and contributed three assists and three steals in a 78-58 win at Georgia State.

For the week, she shot 42.9 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.

Walters is the SoCon’s first freshman women’s basketball player of the week since Wofford’s Jackie Carman on Nov. 27, 2018.  

After three road games to open the season, Furman (1-2) remains on the road for the next two contests, playing at Tennessee on Thursday, Dec. 10, and at Elon on Sunday, Dec. 13.
