SoCon Goes Pro: NFL Week 14

SoConSports.com will provide weekly notes of former SoCon players throughout the NFL season

James Bradberry (Samford) continues to lead the NFL in passes defended with a new total of 17 after recording seven solo tackles and a pass defended in the Giants’ 26-7 loss to the Cardinals. The former Bulldog cornerback played great man-on-man coverage in the end zone with a perfect vertical jump to prevent an Arizona touchdown. In addition to his 17 passes defended, Bradberry has totaled 39 solo tackles, two forced fumbles and three interceptions with just two regular-season games remaining.

Sam Martin (Appalachian State) punted four times, averaging 44.3 yards in the Broncos’ 32-27 win over the Carolina Panthers. Martin put up a 59-yard punt with only three minutes left in the game, placing Carolina at its 37-yard line to hamper the Panthers’ chances at a scoring drive.

Andre Roberts (The Citadel) and the Buffalo Bills took home a 26-15 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, as the team continues to hold its first-place spot in the AFC East (10-3). He returned three kickoffs for 93 yards and two punts for 15 yards. Roberts has his eyes set on both the Pro Bowl roster and a possible playoff berth, as he holds the second-most kickoff return yards in the league (810 yards).

The Atlanta Falcons’ Younghoe Koo (Georgia Southern) enters another week leading the league in field goals made (33) and total points scored (124). Koo went 1-for-1 on field goals and 2-for-2 on point-after attempts in the Falcons’ 20-17 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Keion Crossen (Western Carolina) made a season-high eight solo tackles during the Texans’ 36-7 loss at Chicago. The former Catamount also recorded his first pass defended on the season.

"SoCon Goes Pro" takes on a new meaning with former Western Carolina running back Detrez Newsome, who has signed with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League (CFL) on Monday. Newsome (2014-17) finished his collegiate career second in the Catamount football record books with 3,728 yards, while his rushing average of 6.0 yards per carry is the best by a WCU back all-time. The Raeford, N.C., native accounted for 37 rushing touchdowns, tied with Otis McIntosh (1968-71) for first in school history.
