SoCon Goes Pro: NFL Week 12

SoConSports.com will provide weekly notes of former SoCon players throughout the NFL season

Former Southern Conference football players saw plenty of action during the week of Thanksgiving, as Younghoe Koo (Georgia Southern) now leads the NFL in points scored (109), Buster Skrine (Chattanooga) made a career-high 10 solo tackles, James Bradberry (Samford) is one pass shy of leading the NFL in passes defended (15) and Nick Williams (Samford) recorded his first sack on the season.

Koo had another week filled with impressive stats, building his resume for a potential 2020-21 Pro Bowl roster spot as one of the most impressive kickers in the NFL this season. The former Georgia Southern kicker went 5-for-5 on field goals and 4-for-4 on point-after attempts in the Atlanta Falcons’ 43-6 win over the Raiders. Koo’s 19 points from Sunday are a season high and make him the top scorer in the NFL heading into Week 13. This is also his second week leading the NFL in field goals made (29). To add more to Koo’s outstanding performance, he scored more points than seven teams who played between Thursday and Sunday. Shout out to who? Younghoe Koo.

There’s no stopping the Buffalo Bills’ Andre Roberts (The Citadel) when he’s lined up deep for kickoff and punt returns. The former Bulldog also has his eyes set on the Pro Bowl roster with a season total of 692 kickoff return yards, which is the second-most in the NFL through Week 12. Roberts returned four kickoffs for 111 yards and three punts for a total of 26 yards in the Bills’ 32-30 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Nick Williams (Samford, Lions) and Keion Crossen (Western Carolina, Texans) spent Thanksgiving Day on the field during the Houston Texans’ 41-25 win over the Detroit Lions. Williams had a lot to be grateful for when he made his first sack on the season, preventing Texans QB Deshaun Watson from passing the ball.

Crossen had five tackles (three solo) and one pass defended for Houston in his 27th game as a Texan after playing for the New England Patriots his rookie year.

Matt Breida (Georgia Southern) had eight carries for 36 yards and two receptions for 17 yards in the Dolphins’ 20-3 win over the New York Jets. Breida went back-to-back with teammate Devante Parker for first downs in a drive that resulted in a 51-yard field goal.

Buster Skrine dominated for the Bears’ defense with 10 solo tackles, marking his most solo tackles in a single game since joining the league in 2011. He had a total of 13 tackles, which is a career high for the former Chattanooga Moc.

James Bradberry (Samford) came off the New York Giants’ bye week with one solo tackle and a pass defended, as he remains tied second in the NFL on passes defended (15).

Sam Martin (Appalachian State) previewed the Broncos’ Sunday afternoon game against the New Orleans Saints during a Twitter live interview hosted by the team. During the game Sunday, he punted seven times for a total of 332 yards (47.4 yards per punt average).

Jerick McKinnon had three carries for 21 yards and two receptions for 11 yards in the San Francisco 49ers’ 23-20 win over the Los Angeles Rams. McKinnon has a total of 315 rushing yards and 197 receiving yards on the season with five touchdowns.
