BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Four Campbell wrestlers are set to compete this weekend at Senior Nationals, set for the new Xtream Arena & GreenState Family Fieldhouse in Coralville, Iowa, October 9-11.
Set to compete from Campbell at 65kg are Noah Gonser and Josh Heil, as well as Austin Kraisser at 74kg and Andrew Morgan at 86kg.
Gonser wrapped up a tremendous collegiate career on the mat in 2019-20, including two years at Campbell. Named NWCA Second Team All-American as a senior, Gonser was also named the 2020 SoCon Wrestler of the Year, ending the year with a 14-match winning streak, carrying a 30-5 overall record, and earning his third berth to the NCAA Championships.
Collecting First Team NWCA All-American honors in 2019-20, Heil became Campbell's first three-time SoCon Champion in March, also qualifying for the NCAA Championships for a third time. The Brunswick, Ohio native fashioned a 29-4 record as a redshirt junior this season, earning a No. 8 seed in the 2020 NCAA Championships.
Kraisser took third at 174 pounds at the 2020 SoCon Championships, his third career podium finish. He also earned the SoCon Pinnacle Award, given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA on the championship winning team. Kraisser went 27-8 overall on the season with a 7-1 dual mark.
Also earning First Team NWCA All-American accolades and a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Championships last season, Morgan claimed the 2020 SoCon title at 184 pounds, the first of his career. Ranking as high as No. 6 in the nation this season, Morgan qualified for his second straight NCAA appearance at 30-5 overall. The Fountain Valley, Calif. native won 11 straight bouts to end the season.
The event’s schedule was
altered slightly this week, with all six Greco-Roman weight classes being completed on Friday, October 9. The men's freestyle begins Saturday, and all six men's freestyle weight classes will be completed on Sunday, October 11.
Three major time changes to note are: 1) Session II on Friday will be extended one hour, scheduled to complete at about 9:00 p.m. 2) There will only be two sessions on Saturday, with the competition expected to end about 30 minutes earlier in the evening at approximately 8:00 p.m.; 3) The second session of Sunday will be held earlier than previously announced, with a start time of 12:30 p.m. and an expected completion at 1:30 p.m.
