Cross Country Championships moved to Nov. 21

Meet will remain in Macon, Georgia, as originally scheduled

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference Cross Country Championships will move back to the fall and will be conducted on Nov. 21 in Macon, Georgia, Commissioner Jim Schaus announced Monday. The league’s directors of athletics voted to approve the change.

The decision to move the cross country championships back to the fall was made in an effort to minimize conflict with the indoor track and field season and championships as well as to reduce the amount of spring events created when fall sports were moved to the spring in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The cross country championship meet will be conducted with enhanced safety protocols, details of which will be announced at a later date.

“This was a prudent decision, since by doing so, it eliminates the training overlap with distance runners who might have had to choose between the SoCon cross country and indoor championships,” Schaus said. “Plus, it also assists in reducing the volume of competitions and championships in the spring.”
