SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Katarina Kozarov has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Jan. 21-27, the conference office announced Tuesday. Kozarov, a senior, went 2-0 in both singles and doubles, all at the No. 1 spot.
This week, Furman (3-3) fell 4-2 to Notre Dame but came back to pick up a 4-3 win over Michigan State as part of the ITA Kick-Off event in Athens, Ga.
In singles, Kozarov, ranked No. 13 nationally, cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Notre Dame’s Zoe Spence. The next day, the two-time defending SoCon Player of the Year downed Michigan State’s Mary Lewis, ranked 110th, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
In doubles play, Kozarov and teammate Julia Adams, ranked 30th, beat the Irish’s top duo 6-3 before beating the Spartans’ top pair by the same score a day later.
Furman is back in action on Feb. 1, playing Lipscomb in Louisville, Kentucky, before squaring off with the Louisville Cardinals the following day.
Also nominated: Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (ETSU), Rouxanne Janse van Rensburg (Samford), Jordan Strickland (Western Carolina) and Lilie Steryous (Wofford).
