Codi Russell named SoCon Wrestler of the Week

Led the Mountaineers to a win over Lock Haven

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State’s Codi Russell has been named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from Jan. 15-21. The selection is made by the league office.

Russell secured a 5-3 decision against 29th-ranked DJ Fehlman of Lock Haven in his lone match of the week at 133 pounds. The Atlanta, Georgia, native was looking to avenge a pair of losses to Fehlman last year, which included a meeting at the NCAA Championships. The two were all even late in the third period before Russell secured the tiebreaking takedown with just 53 seconds remaining. Russell’s win helped propel the Mountaineers to a 29-10 win and improved his overall record to 18-8 this season.

The weekly award is the first of Russell’s career.

The Mountaineers will return to action on Jan. 23 when they host Duke at 6:30 p.m.

Also nominated: Jason Kraisser (Campbell), Dazjon Casto (The Citadel), Kyle Gorant (Davidson), Imani Heslop (Presbyterian), Matthew Waddell (Chattanooga) and Neal Richards (VMI).
