SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Ryan Adams and Samford’s Justin Stuckey have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Samford’s McKenzie Hogue and VMI’s Sarah Leckman claimed the honors on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included competition held Jan. 16-19.

Making his indoor season debut, Furman’s Adams competed at the Vanderbilt Invitational over the weekend, posting the first sub-4:00 mile in school history. The redshirt senior from Hudson, Ohio, finished second in the event with a time of 3:57.66, just 0.63 seconds out of first and shaving more than five seconds off Troy Reeder’s school record of 4:02.91 from 2017. Adams’ time is good for second on the NCAA Division I performance list this season.

Stuckey competed at the Bulldogs’ first home meets of the season, kicking off the Samford Invite with a first-place finish in the high jump with a SoCon-leading leap of 2.12 meters (6 feet, 11 1/2 inches), good for 29th on the NCAA Division I performance list. The sophomore from Helena, Alabama, also took sixth in the long jump at the Samford Open, turning in a jump of 6.64 meters (21 feet, 9 1/2 inches), which is good for fourth in the league this season. 

Samford’s Hogue also competed at the Samford Invite, with the freshman from Alabaster, Alabama, winning the mile in 4:49.55, the best mark in the league this season. Hogue won the event for the second straight week, as she also claimed the mile at the UAB Blazer Invitational on Jan. 10. 

Leckman competed in VMI’s home opener, the Keydet Invitational, over the weekend. The junior from Alexandria, Virginia, took third in the shot put with an ECAC qualifying mark of 13.80 meters (45 feet, 3 1/2 inches), the best throw in the SoCon this season. Leckman also took 11th in the weight throw, turning in a heave of 14.32 meters (46 feet, 11 3/4 inches), which is eighth in the league so far.
