Furman's Walker named student-athlete of the week

Posted a 3-0 record in singles and 2-1 in doubles

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman women’s tennis player Georgie Walker has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Jan. 15-21. The selection is made by the league office. 

Walker posted a 3-0 record in singles play last week, scoring wins over Georgia Tech, Davidson and USC Upstate. The junior defeated Rosie Garcia Gross of Georgia Tech at flight five before moving to flight four and scoring a win over Davidson’s Mira Gladstone. Walker then made the jump to flight two and defeated Elin Hellberg of USC Upstate. She also posted a 2-1 record in doubles during the week, teaming with MaryAnn Rompf for victories over Davidson and USC Upstate.

Walker is a French major and currently holds a 3.93 grade point average.

The Paladins will be back in action on Jan. 25 when they travel to Athens, Georgia, for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend where they will open with a match against Notre Dame at 10 a.m.

Also nominated: Isaiah Tisdale (ETSU men’s basketball), Djordje Dimitrijevic (Mercer men’s basketball), Drew Nicholson (Chattanooga wrestling) and Storm Murphy (Wofford men’s basketball).
