SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Emmanuel Tait and Matt Cahoon have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Western Carolina’s Makaila McIntyre and Wofford’s Georgia McDevitt claimed the honors on the women’s side, the conference office announced Thursday.

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included competition held Jan. 10-11.

Samford’s Tait competed at the UAB Blazer Invitational on Friday. There, the Alabaster, Alabama, senior turned in a time of 8.00 seconds to place third in the 60-meter hurdles and match the best time in the SoCon this season. Tait also ran a 6.95 in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash and placed 15th in the 300-meter dash, with his time of 35.31 good for the second-best time in the event in school history.

At the same meet, the Bulldogs’ Cahoon, a junior from Cullman, Alabama, finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 15.03 meters (49 feet, 3 3/4 inches) and took eighth in the weight throw with a career-best heave of 16.56 meters (54 feet, 4 inches) that leads the SoCon on the young season.

McIntyre competed at the ETSU Track and Field Invitational over the weekend, turning in a time of 7.79 seconds in the 60-meter dash in both the prelims and the final to take second in both. The senior from Peachtree City, Georgia, also ran in the 200-meter dash prelims, turning in a time of 26.37 seconds.

Also competing at ETSU, McDevitt, a freshman from Maryville, Tennessee, took second in both the long jump and triple jump, setting Wofford records in both events. In the long jump, McDevitt turned in a leap of 5.96 meters (19 feet, 6 3/4 inches), which leads the SoCon this season, while her mark of 11.59 meters (38 feet, 1/4 inch) in the triple is third in the league. McDevitt also turned in a league-leading time of 24.84 seconds to take the top spot in the 200-meter dash prelims and ran a leg on Wofford’s fourth-place 4x400-meter relay team, which clocked 4:00.92.
