SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Richmond attack Teddy Hatfield and Mercer faceoff Ashton Wood have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition April 16-22. The awards are selected by the league office.
UR’s Hatfield scored four goals and added three assists for a seven-point day in the Spiders’ 15-9 win over Mercer on April 20, which clinched a spot in the upcoming SoCon Men’s Lacrosse Championship. The senior from Summit, New Jersey, pushed his season assist total to 28, surpassing his own program record of 26 from 2017, and his point total to 59, matching his own record from 2017. Hatfield scored a goal in each quarter.
Richmond (8-5, 5-1 SoCon) visits No. 12 High Point (11-2, 5-1) Saturday in a game that will determine at least a share of the SoCon regular-season crown.
Mercer’s Wood earned his third weekly honor in the last five weeks after posting 18 ground balls and winning 22 faceoffs in the loss to Richmond. The freshman from St. Augustine, Florida, fell just one ground ball shy of the SoCon record he set on April 6, while his 22 faceoff wins tied for fourth in a game in SoCon history. For the day, he went 22-for-28 (.786). Wood is ninth in NCAA Division I with a .635 faceoff winning percentage this season, while his 7.25 ground balls per game rank 17th.
Mercer (1-11, 1-5) hosts Jacksonville (5-8, 4-2) Saturday close out its season.
Other offensive nominees: Trent Harper (Air Force), Morgan Macko (Bellarmine), Chad Kreuzer (Furman), Asher Nolting (High Point), Eric Applegate (Jacksonville) and Michael Quinn (Mercer).
