ETSU's Rengifo named player of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Frazier Rengifo has been named the Southern Conference men’s tennis player of the week for all matches played March 26 to April 1, the conference announced Tuesday. The honor is Rengifo’s fifth of the season and third consecutive.  

The Bucs went 2-0 on the week, notching 6-1 wins over Charlotte and Chattanooga. 

In singles action, the native of Cali, Colombia, lost the first set at flight one but fought back to down Charlotte’s Luca Keist, ranked No. 106 nationally, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 on March 29. Two days later against Chattanooga, Rengifo moved to 5-0 in conference play with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) win against the Mocs’ top player, Niklas Gerdes.

In doubles play, the sophomore and partner Yusuf Khamis defeated Charlotte’s duo of Keist and Canstandinos Christoforou, ranked 22nd nationally, 6-1. Against Chattanooga, the pair played at No. 1 and fell to Simon Bustamante and Kerim Hyatt 4-6. 

Rengifo and the Bucs (14-4, 7-0 SoCon) return to the courts later in the week, hosting UNCW on Saturday, April 6. ETSU concludes conference play and the regular season at Mercer on Saturday, April 12, and against The Citadel on Sunday, April 13, in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Also nominated: Jack Burkill (UNCG) and Aleksandor Petrovic (Samford).
