UNCG's Bridges named player of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Nancy Bridges has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played March 26 to April 1, the conference office announced Tuesday. The award is the first of the season for Bridges and UNCG, though the senior was honored on March 13, 2018.  

Bridges went 2-0 in both singles and doubles on the week as UNCG won a pair of conference matches at Western Carolina and against Samford.

In singles action, Bridges began the week by downing Western Carolina’s Jordan Strickland 7-5, 6-4 in the top spot on March 28. Two days later in UNCG’s home regular-season finale, Bridges fell in the first set but fought back for a 6-7 (4-6), 6-3, 6-3 win against Samford’s top player Grace Jennings.

In doubles play, Bridges and her partner Erika Barquero defeated the Catamounts’ Strickland and Savannah Taranto 6-3 at No. 1. The pair followed with a 6-3 win against Samford’s top duo, Holly Horsfall and Elsa Pool, 6-3.

UNCG (7-10, 2-3 SoCon) plays a nonconference match at Elon on Wednesday, April 3, before returning to conference action at Chattanooga (9-8, 1-3) on Saturday, April 6.

Also nominated: Laylo Bakhodirova (ETSU), Katty Weymouth (Furman) and Jacy Smith (Western Carolina).
