SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford guard Fletcher Magee was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week on Tuesday after averaging 27 points per game, propelling the Terriers to a perfect 18-0 finish in Southern Conference play and No. 22 overall ranking the AP Top 25 Poll.
In addition to being the first SoCon player to ever win the award, Magee joins teammate Cameron Jackson as the only two Terriers to win national player of the week honors (Dec. 26, 2017 – Lute Olson Award). To find out more about the USBWA and its weekly award, visit their website here.
In a pair of victories at Chattanooga and Samford, Magee grabbed seven rebounds, dished out six assists and totaled four steals as the Terriers (26-4) became the first team to finish SoCon play undefeated since the 2007-08 Davidson squad went 20-0 behind star Stephen Curry. The Orlando, Florida, native shot almost 62 percent from the field (61.9 percent), going 13-for-21 (58.1 percent) from 3-point range as the SoCon's all-time 3-point field goal leader now sits just 15 3s shy of breaking Travis Bader's (Oakland) NCAA Division I record for made 3-pointers (504).
Against Chattanooga on Thursday, Magee scored a game-high 18 points in just 24 minutes of the Terriers’ 80-54 win. Going 5-for-7 from 3-point range, Magee dished out two assists, grabbed three rebounds and one steal while going a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.
In the regular-season finale on Saturday, Magee scored a season-high 36 points on 13-for-21 shooting from the floor (61.9 percent) while going 8-for-14 (57.1 percent) from 3-point range in the 85-64 victory over Samford. The win capped Wofford’s 18-0 league record and was the Terriers’ school-record 26th in the regular season.
Magee leads the SoCon in scoring (22.9), free throw percentage (93.4 percent), 3-point field goal percentage (46.8 percent) and made 3-pointers (94) in SoCon contests. Currently, Magee leads the nation in made 3-pointers (139) and 3-point field goals per game (4.63), ranking second with a free-throw percentage of 92.7.
The No. 1-seeded Terriers open postseason play in the quarterfinals of the Ingles Southern Conference Men's Basketball Championship presented by General Shale on Saturday at noon. The Terriers will play either No. 8 seed VMI (10-20, 4-14) or Western Carolina (7-24, 4-14), who open the tournament with a first-round contest on Friday at 5 p.m.
