Nanny, Heinecke named SoCon Players of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina’s outfielder Daylan Nanny and Wofford’s left-hander Hayes Heinecke have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games Feb. 25- March 3. The selections are made by the league office.

Starting all five games for the Catamounts this past week at either outfield or first base, Nanny hit .429 from the plate with two homeruns and three doubles, resulting in six RBIs and a .857 slugging percentage. The six runs drove in were a weekend team best. He added a walk and a hit-by-a-pitch for a team-high .478 on-base percentage.

Western Carolina (5-5) heads to Asheville, North Carolina, on Wednesday to take on the Bulldogs (4-6) before heading to Greenville, South Carolina, to play in the First Pitch Invitational this weekend.

Also nominated: Ryan McCarthy (The Citadel), Cade Gilbert (ETSU), Collin Price (Mercer), Braden Fryman (Samford) and Lawson Hill (Wofford). 

In the first game of a doubleheader against Harvard, Heinecke did not allow a run and pitched a complete game shutout in seven innings. The freshman recorded six strikeouts and held opponents to a .087 batting average.

Wofford (6-5) is set to take on USC Upstate (5-6) on Tuesday before heading to Clinton, South Carolina, on Wednesday to take on Presbyterian (4-6).

Also nominated: Jordan Merritt (The Citadel), Landon Knack (ETSU), Beau Healy (Mercer), Zach Hester (Samford) and Adam Jewell (VMI).
