CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 18th-ranked University of Richmond men’s lacrosse program closed out the nonconference portion of the regular season Friday night as the Spiders dropped a 16-7 contest to No. 7 Virginia at Klockner Stadium.

Friday’s game marked the fourth meeting this season for the Spiders against a nationally ranked opponent. Richmond has already played No. 3 Maryland (L, 9-10), No. 6 Notre Dame (W, 9-8) and No. 6 Duke (L, 7-11).

Virginia controlled play in the first half, outshooting the Spiders by a 34-8 margin in the opening 30 minutes. The Cavaliers scored eight goals in the first half, including a 5-1 showing in the second quarter. Virginia won the face-off battle in the first half, winning 10-of-12. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Blake Goodman recorded 10 saves in the first half.

Senior attack Teddy Hatfield scored the Spiders’ first goal in the first half, notching his 23rd of the season off an assist from senior Drew Petkevich early in the first. Hatfield scored second of the half with 3:09 remaining in second quarter, scoring as the Spiders generated offense from defense, scoring in transition after a caused turnover from Sean Menges.

The Spiders settled into the third quarter and cleaned up their play coming out of the halftime. Sophomore Brett Reid scored his second of the season, while Mitch Savoca added his 13th of the year. Hatfield recorded his sixth hat trick of the season, scoring his third late in the third. He also became the first Spider in program history to reach the 200-point mark in his career with an assist on Reid’s goal.

Richmond added a pair of goals in the fourth with Savoca scoring his second of the game and Nick D’Amaro rounded out the scoring with his third of the year. The Spiders finished the game being outshot 57-23 but Goodman and Jack Rusbuldt combined for 18 saves in the loss.

The Spiders jump back into Southern Conference play Saturday, April 6, when they travel to the Sunshine State for a meeting against Jacksonville. Game time is set for noon.
