Connolly named student-athlete of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel’s Shane Connolly has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from March 20 – 26. This is his second selection of the year.

The Huntersville, North Carolina, native tossed his second complete-game shutout of the season on Saturday against VMI in the Bulldogs conference-opening series. The sophomore limited the Keydets to just four singles and after giving up two hits in the second inning, did not allow another hit until the seventh inning, only allowing one base runner to reach base.

With this second complete-game shutout he became the only pitcher in Division I baseball with two complete-game shutouts this season. He was also named this week’s SoCon pitcher of the week for the second time this season as well as was named this week conference’s College Sports Madness player of the week.

Connolly, a sophomore, currently holds a 3.92 grade point average in business administration.

The Bulldogs will next travel to Greenville, South Carolina, this weekend for a conference matchup with the Furman Paladins.

Also nominated for SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week: Kennedy Thomson (Chattanooga women’s outdoor track and field), Matthew Scarr (ETSU men’s track and field), Amanda Thompson (Mercer women’s basketball), Madison Couch (Samford softball) and Storm Murphy (Wofford men’s basketball).
