SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina’s Jacy Smith has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played March 12-18, the conference office announced Tuesday. Smith, a freshman, went 4-0 in both singles and doubles to help Western Carolina go undefeated on the week.

The native of Bryan, Texas, is just the fifth Western Carolina women’s tennis player since 2000 to garner a weekly award. She sits at 12-3 on the season and has won eight straight matches at No. 2 singles and nine straight at No. 2 doubles.

In singles action, Smith started off the week with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Fairleigh Dickinson on March 12. The following day, she earned a 6-2, 6-2 win against UNCW before downing Saint Joseph’s Isis Gill-Reid 6-1, 6-0 on March 14. She defeated Bucknell’s Cayla Koch 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 the next day to earn her fourth win in as many days.

In doubles play, Smith and her partner Julia Pezzuco began with a 6-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson and downed UNCG’s No. 2 pair 6-3. The duo kept rolling with a 6-3 win against Saint Joseph’s before closing the week with a 6-1 win over Bucknell.  

Western Carolina hosts Chattanooga on Sunday, March 24.
