SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Frazier Rengifo has been named the Southern Conference men’s tennis player of the week for all matches played March 12-18, the conference announced Tuesday. The honor is Rengifo’s third of the season.
In singles action, the native of Cali, Colombia, downed Middle Tennessee’s Stijn Slump 6-1, 7-6 in the top spot on March 15. Two days later, the sophomore handed Elon’s Felipe Sarrasgue his first singles loss since he fell against Duke in the season opener on Jan. 12. Rengifo won 7-5, 6-2 to record his fourth straight-set victory of the season and second of the week. The 5-2 victory over Elon moved the Bucs to double-digit wins on the season (10) and dealt the Phoenix just their fourth loss on the year.
In doubles play, Rengifo’s doubles match with partner Yusuf Khamis went unfinished against Middle Tennessee and the duo, playing at No. 2, rolled past Elon’s pair, 6-1.
Rengifo and the Bucs return to the courts later in the week, hosting Furman on Friday, March 22, and Samford on Sunday, March 24.
Also nominated: Phillip Quinn (The Citadel), Ivan Mitric (Furman), Ollie Palmer (UNCG), Aleksandar Petrovic (Samford), Tomas Rodriguez (Chattanooga) and Edu Villar (Wofford).
