Thompson named student-athlete of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Amanda Thompson has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from March 6 – 12.  This is her third selection of the year.

The Haynesville, North Carolina, native had a standout week as she helped lead the Bears to win the 2019 SoCon women’s basketball championships on Sunday. She notched 17 rebounds, one shy of a career-high, against Western Carolina in the semifinals and averaged 12.3 rebounds, 8 points and 2.3 steals per game throughout the tournament. She earned the COSIDA Academic All-American award earlier this week as well as earned the Pinnacle Award and was named to the All-SoCon Tournament First Team this past weekend. The senior currently averages 10.7 points, 13.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.2 steals for the on the season.

The Bears now turn their attention to the NCAA tournament selection show, which will take place on Monday, March 18 at 7 p.m. to see who they will be facing and where they will go for the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Thompson, a senior, currently holds a 3.9 grade point average in electrical engineering.
