SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Jacksonville’s Jack Dolan and High Point’s Davis Sampere have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition March 5-11. The awards are selected by the league office.
JU’s Dolan earned the honor for the second straight week after totaling 12 points in games against No. 1 Towson and No. 4 Penn State. Against the top-ranked Tigers on Friday, Dolan scored three goals and assisted on four as the Dolphins’ fourth-quarter comeback attempt fell short in a 15-13 setback. With JU facing a 13-7 deficit entering the final period, Dolan scored just 32 seconds into the frame and assisted on two of Jacksonville’s five other goals in the quarter. The sophomore midfielder from Columbus, Ohio, also had a goal and an assist in both the second and third quarters. Against the fourth-ranked Nittany Lions – now ranked No. 1 – Dolan scored three goals and dished off two assists in a 24-11 loss. He scored the opening goal of the game just 38 seconds in and picked up an assist less than three minutes in as JU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead.
Jacksonville (1-6) opens Southern Conference play Saturday at noon Eastern when it visits Bellarmine (0-6, 0-0 SoCon) in Louisville, Kentucky.
High Point’s Sampere scooped up a career-high 15 ground balls in the Panthers’ 22-13 win over UMBC on Saturday, tied for the third-most in a game in SoCon history. The junior faceoff specialist from Raleigh, North Carolina, also won a career-high 19 faceoffs, going 19-for-23 (.826), and helped HPU win a program-record 31 total. The Panthers moved up one spot to No. 12 in the USILA poll and two spots to No. 10 in the Inside Lacrosse poll.
High Point (6-1) open SoCon play Friday at 7 p.m. at VMI (3-2, 0-1 SoCon) in Lexington, Virginia.
