SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Katarina Kozarov has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Jan. 11 through Feb. 4, the conference office announced Tuesday. Kozarov, a junior, is 5-0 in singles, all at the No. 1 spot, and 4-1 in doubles at flight one. Overall, Furman is off to a 4-1 start, losing only to Louisville, 4-3.

Kozarov started the season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Elon’s Suzanne Zenoni on Jan. 20 and downed Georgia State’s Eva Chivu 6-1, 7-5 the next day. She then reeled off three wins from Feb. 1-3 to move to 5-0 on the year. First, she defeated Charleston Southern’s Madalina Man 6-2, 6-2 on Feb. 1. She won both her matches on Feb. 3, beating Louisville’s Aleksandra Mally 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) and Emmanuel College’s Fantine Botella 6-2, 6-1. 

In doubles play, Kozarov and her partner, Taylor Melville, beat Elon 6-0 to open the season, but the pair fell 5-7 to Georgia State’s top team a day later. Against Charleston Southern, Louisville and Emmanuel College, Kozarov was paired with Julia Adams and earned a 3-0 record at No. 1.

Furman is back in action on Feb. 6 when the Paladins head up I-85 to face USC Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina at 3 p.m.
