SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s shortstop RJ Yeager and The Citadel right-hander Jordan Merritt have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games Feb. 18 - 24. The selections are made by the league office.

Starting all four games for the Bears at shortstop this past week, Yeager hit .444 from the plate with four home runs and a double, resulting in nine RBIs. On Sunday, he hit three of his four homeruns to help the Bears to a 8-7 comeback win against Alabama A&M. He had at least one hit in all four games played, including multiple hits in each of Mercer’s wins over the weekend

Mercer (6-1) welcomes Florida A&M (2-7) for a midweek series before traveling to Tallahassee, Florida, for a weekend series against Florida State (7-0).

Also nominated: Cullen Smith (ETSU), Jordan Fucci (Samford), Justice Bigbie (Western Carolina) and Brett Rodriguez (Wofford).

The Citadel’s Merritt allowed just one earned run and struck out seven of 7.0 innings against No. 17 Michigan on Saturday. The senior allowed the lone run in the second and then did not allow a runner to get past second base the remainder of the outing. He currently holds a 0.66 ERA.

The Citadel (2-4) is set to play Kent State (1-5) on Wednesday at home before welcoming North Alabama (2-4) this weekend.

Also nominated: Micah Kaczor (ETSU), Tanner Hall (Mercer), Taylor Purus (Western Carolina) and Matt Ellmyer (Wofford).
