SPARTANBURG, S.C. – High Point’s Asher Nolting and Tim Troutner Jr. have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition Feb. 12-18. The awards are selected by the league office.
Nolting and Troutner won the awards for the second straight week after leading the Panthers to their second win over a top-10 opponent in as many weeks. High Point, which entered the national rankings after opening the season with victories over St. Bonaventure and No. 2 Duke, earned a 15-14, overtime win over Drexel on Saturday and downed Virginia, ranked No. 9 by Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine, 14-13 Monday night.
Nolting had six goals and three assists for nine points on the week. In the win over the Dragons, the sophomore attackman from Greenwood Village, Colorado, scored twice and assisted on three goals, including on the tying score with 5:29 left in regulation and on the game-winner with 41 seconds left in OT. Against the Cavaliers, Nolting matched his career high with four goals. Nolting has scored at least two points in all 18 of his career games and is already sixth in league history in career assists (46).
Troutner averaged 15 saves and posted a 13.14 goals against average on the week, turning in a save percentage of .526 and playing every minute in goal in the two wins. He also averaged 4.0 ground balls and 2.0 caused turnovers per game. The senior goalkeeper from Annapolis, Maryland, faced 50 shots against Drexel, making 13 saves on the day. Two days later, he faced 45 shots and made 17 saves in the win over Virginia, picking up his second win over an ACC program and his second top-10 win of the season. He had five ground balls in the contest. Already the league’s career saves leader (525), Troutner extended his school record for wins to 22.
High Point, which has beaten two ranked teams in the same season for the first time in school history, puts its 4-0 record and national rankings on the line when it welcomes St. John’s for a noon contest Saturday at Vert Stadium, site of this season’s SoCon Men’s Lacrosse Championship. The Panthers are ranked No. 11 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine and Inside Lacrosse polls and No. 13 in the USILA poll.
