Three named Collegiate Baseball All-Americans

Samford's Sonny DiChiara, Zach Hester and Wofford's Hayes Heinecke selected

TUSCON-Ariz. – Wofford’s Hayes Heinecke was named to the 2020 Collegiate Baseball Pre-Season All-American Second Team, while Samford’s Zach Hester and Sonny DiChiara were selected to the third team, Collegiate Baseball announced Tuesday morning.

Heinecke was named to the publication’s second team as a left-handed pitcher. The Fayetteville, Georgia, native headlined the Terrier pitching staff and led the SoCon in wins with 10, which was the 11th-most in the nation. Heinecke posted a 10-2 record over 15 starts with 84 strikeouts and just 15 walks over 88.1 innings. He recorded an ERA of 2.65, which was good for fifth in the league. Last season, Heinecke was named to the 2019 Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-America team. The Sophomore was also named to the All-SoCon second team by the media and the SoCon Freshman of the Year by the coaches.

Hester was named to the third team as a right-handed pitcher. The Vidor, Texas, native posted a 7-4 record in 2019 with a 2.17 ERA, which led the team and was the third-best mark in the conference. He led the team with 82 strikeouts while allowing just 12 walks in 83.0 innings of work. Hester held opposing batters to a .216 batting average. He was also named to the 2019 ABCA Central All-Region team last season.

DiChiara was named to the third team as a first baseman. The Hoover, Alabama, native led the team and finished second in the SoCon in both home runs (21) and runs batted in (55). DiChiara batted .293 and posted an impressive .646 slugging percentage. He had four games during the season with multiple home runs. After the 2019 season, DiChiara was named a freshman All-American by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He was also a first-team All-SoCon selection by both the media and coaches, as well as being the media’s selection for SoCon Freshman of the Year.
