KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Furman’s Jack Shiels, Conor Sloan and Mercer’s Leo Toledo Jr. were named to the 2019 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men’s Scholar All-South Region second and third teams, announced by the association today.

Shiels was the lone SoCon selection on the second team after he netted three goals and added an assist on his way to earning first-team All-Southern Conference honors in 2019. He found the back of the net in victories over Davidson, VMI and Wofford as a senior. The Manchester, England, native and communications major posted a 3.40 grade point average.

Sloan, a second-team All-SoCon choice, was named to the third team after he appeared in all 19 matches and scored five goals to go with six assists. The Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, product netted two goals, including the match-winner, at Gardner-Webb and assisted on Rocky Guerra’s late game-winner in a 1-0 triumph over UNCG. The economics major posted a 3.33 grade point average.

Toledo represented Mercer on the third team following a strong redshirt junior season that saw him net three goals and dish out four assists for 10 points. The Gillsville, Georgia, native scored the game-winning goal in double overtime against Furman to send the Bears to the SoCon Men’s Soccer Championship final, where they won their third title. Toledo is a marketing major with a 3.672 grade point average.

Student-athletes receiving Scholar All-Region recognition at the NCAA Division I level must hold a 3.30 grade point average, start more than 50 percent of all games with significant contribution and be a junior or above in academic standing.
