KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Mercer forward Trevor Martineau and UNC Greensboro defender Casey Penland were named to the 2019 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men’s All-South Region third team, announced the United Soccer Coaches association this morning.
Martineau led the conference in points (38), goals (14), assists (10) and game-winning goals (five) during an impressive sophomore campaign. The Montreal, Quebec, native lands on the list for the second consecutive year after earning a second-team selection last season. Martineau captured four conference offensive player of the week honors and was named the men’s soccer offensive player of the month for September. The All-SoCon first team selection led Mercer to its third SoCon Men’s Soccer Championship title as he scored the lone goal of the 1-0 win over UNCG in the final on Nov. 17.
Penland was named to the All-South Region third team after a standout season for the Spartans that saw him named the SoCon Player of the Year. The High Point, North Carolina, native was also an All-SoCon first team selection and guided UNCG to a 9-9-1 record overall which included a 5-1 mark in conference play. The Spartans won a share of the regular-season title and were the second seed in the SoCon Men’s Soccer Championship where they advanced to the finals before falling to Mercer. The senior scored five goals and added an assist for 11 points while anchoring a backline that allowed just two goals in six conference games.
