SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford senior right-side hitter Kelsi Hobbs was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week for competition Nov. 19-25. Hobbs, the 2019 SoCon Player of the Year, guided No. 1 seed Samford to a 3-2 win over No. 2 seed ETSU in the Southern Conference Championship, taking the hardware back to Birmingham, Alabama, for the second straight season.
Hobbs, a native of Hoover, Alabama, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament after hitting .394 and averaging 4.54 kills per set in three wins on the week. In the quarterfinals against The Citadel, the No. 8 seed, Hobbs hit .364 with a match-high 10 kills, adding six digs and two blocks in a 3-0 sweep. Hobbs and the Bulldogs downed Furman, the No. 5 seed, in five sets in the semifinals. In the match, Hobbs 23 kills and had just four errors on 51 swings. She hit .373 and tallied seven digs and another pair of blocks. Hobbs hit .426 and had a match-high and career-high 26 kills in the 3-2 win over the Bucs in the championship. She tallied a double-double in the contest, adding 12 digs on the defensive end.
Hobbs was the Offensive Player of the Week three times in the 2019 campaign. She’s amassed 456 kills, most in the league.
