SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State’s Jonathan Millner has been named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from Nov. 13-19. The selection is made by the league office.
Millner improved to 9-0 on the season as he won his second tournament title of the season at 149 pounds on Nov. 17 at the Wolfpack Open in Raleigh, North Carolina. The redshirt sophomore from Greensboro, North Carolina, opened with an 8-4 decision over Jason Kraisser of Campbell before a dominating 12-1 major decision over Drew Dickson of George Mason. Millner faced a pair of NC State wrestlers in the next two bouts, taking a 6-2 decision against AJ Leitten before picking up a 4-2 decision over Matt Grippi. Millner was matched up with Virginia Tech’s Bryce Andonian in the final and the Hokie grappler led 8-4 early in the second period. After falling behind early, Millner secured the final 12 points of the bout to take a 16-8 major decision and the title at 149 pounds.
The weekly award is the first of Millner’s career.
The Mountaineers will return to action on Nov. 24 at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
