SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Greensboro sophomore guard Kaleb Hunter was named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for all contests from Nov. 5-11 after averaging 19.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in helping the Spartans go 2-1 over the first week of the season. The award is selected by the league office.
Hunter opened the season with 17 points and a career-high seven rebounds in UNCG’s 83-50 win over crosstown rival North Carolina A&T on Nov. 5, going 4-for-8 from the floor and 7-for-7 from the free-throw line in 27 minutes of action. Three days later at No. 3 Kansas, Hunter notched his first career double-double, again scoring 17 points and again setting a new career high with 12 rebounds. Hunter was 7-for-10 from the floor in the game and picked up two steals in the 74-62 loss.
The Louisburg, North Carolina, native capped his opening week with a career-high 24 points to go with three rebounds in just 21 minutes of a 109-51 win over Averett in the first game of the Spartan Invitational on Monday. Hunter was 8-for-9 from the field and another 7-for-7 from the line.
For the week, Hunter shot 70.4 percent from the floor, going 19-for-27. He went 88.9 percent from the free-throw line, converting 16 of his 18 tries, and was 4-for-6 (66.7 percent) from 3-point range.
The Spartans (2-1) resume play at the Spartan Invitational on Friday, when they host Tennessee Tech at 7 p.m. in their on-campus Fleming Gymnasium. UNCG hosts Montana State the following day in Fleming before returning to the Greensboro Coliseum on Monday to face Appalachian State in the final game of the tournament.
