Men's Soccer Southern Conference

Men's soccer players of the week announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its men’s soccer players of the week Tuesday for games played Oct. 15-21. ETSU forward Hauk Andreas Fossen and UNC Greensboro goalkeeper Brendan Pulley were honored as the league’s offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively.

UNCG continued its unbeaten start to conference play by picking up wins over Belmont and Wofford, putting the Spartans at the top of the league table with nine points. ETSU opened the week with a 2-1 non-conference win against Davidson on Oct. 15 and followed with a decisive 3-0 win over VMI on Oct. 19.

Fossen is currently riding a two-game scoring streak after finding the back of the net in both wins during the week. He bagged his first goal in the win over Davidson after his header deflected off a defender right to his feet, setting up a tap-in goal for the freshman from Moelv, Norway. Against VMI, Fossen headed in a goal from a corner kick to open the scoring, which proved to be the game-winner. His goal was his sixth of the season, which leads the team and is tied for second in the conference.

The weekly award is Fossen’s second of his career, with both coming this season.

Pulley made four saves and allowed just one goal in the win over Belmont on Oct. 15, including an impressive diving save to his right in the 88th minute to preserve the victory. The freshman from Holly Springs, North Carolina, picked up the clean sheet in the win against Wofford on Oct. 19. His lone save of the night came in the 16th minute when he made an athletic dive to his left to parry a shot from the outside of the box.

The weekly award is Pulley’s first of his career.

ETSU and UNCG will both be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 22, with the Bucs hosting Mercer and the Spartans traveling to face Furman. Both matches are set to kick off at 7 p.m.

Also nominated for offensive player of the week: Kyle Barks (Belmont), Rocky Guerra (Furman) and Casey Penland (UNCG).

Also nominated for defensive player of the week: Cameron Petty (Belmont), Josh Perryman (ETSU) and Jack Shiels (Furman).
