SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its men’s soccer players of the week Tuesday for games played Sept. 24-30. Mercer forward Trevor Martineau and ETSU defender Joe Pickering were honored as the league’s offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively.

 

Mercer was a perfect 2-0-0 last week, with wins over USC Upstate and Georgia Southern, while ETSU drew with Georgia State in its lone match of the week on Saturday.

 

Martineau continued his impressive run of form this season, adding seven points on two goals and three assists during the week. The sophomore notched a goal and two assists in the overtime win against USC Upstate on Tuesday. Martineau tied the game in the 85^th minute from the penalty spot before assisting on Michael Ille’s game-winner in the 108^th minute. He closed out the week with a goal and an assist in the 3-2 win over Georgia Southern on Friday. Martineau currently leads the conference with 17 points and seven assists and is second in the league with five goals.

 

The weekly award is Martineau’s sixth of his career and the third this season.

 

Pickering played a vital role on both ends during Saturday’s match against Georgia State. The redshirt junior logged 110 minutes in the back of the defense and scored the game-tying goal in the 90^th minute that sent the game into overtime. Pickering found the back of the net with a right-footed volley into the bottom corner, his first goal of the season and fifth of his career.

 

The weekly honor is Pickering’s first of his career.

 

Both squads return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 1, as Mercer hosts Winthrop and ETSU travels to Appalachian State. Each match is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

 

Also nominated for offensive player of the week: Jordan Dozzi (Belmont), Gilbert Miller (ETSU) and Brandon Oddy (Wofford).

Also nominated for defensive player of the week: Nicolo Dini (Belmont), Kareve Richards (Mercer) and Shane Berson (Wofford).
