SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG infielder Tripp Shelton and Wofford left-hander Adam Scott have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games April 23-29. The selections are made by the league office. In addition to being named SoCon Pitcher of the Week, Scott was also named one of Collegiate Baseball’s National Players of the Week.
Shelton launched three home runs while batting .571 and driving in seven runs in three games against Wofford over the weekend. In a series between the top two teams in the SoCon standings, the Winston Salem, North Carolina, native registered two hits and scored one run against the SoCon Pitcher of the Week Adam Scott on Friday. After being held to just one run as a team on Friday, the senior hit a solo shot to left center, putting the Spartans up 1-0 on Saturday. In his next at bat, the shortstop smacked a three-run home run in the top of the third inning to put UNCG ahead 4-1. Shelton would register two more hits and score a season-high four runs in the contest as UNCG topped Wofford 11-5. In the series finale, Shelton broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning with a two-run shot to left field. Shelton would add hit later in the game, going 8-for-14 on the week. Against SoCon competition, Shelton ranks second in the league with a slugging percentage of .714
For the second week in a row and third time this season, Scott claimed SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors. The lefty dominated the opener against UNCG on Friday, allowing just one run in nine innings while striking out 17 batters as the Terriers took the first game of a pivotal SoCon series. The complete game was the sixth of the senior’s career and second this season. The Canandaigua, New York, native currently sits fourth all-time in career strikeouts in the SoCon with 358. With his 17 strikeouts against the Spartans, Scott tied both his career high and school record for strikeouts in a single game, matching Fresno State’s Edgar Gonzalez for most strikeouts in a 2018 Division I game.
Scott leads the SoCon in strikeouts (106) and innings pitched (78 1/3), while holding batters to just a .203 average. In league play, Scott has fanned a conference-best 51 batters and sports a 1.64 earned run average, ranking him second in the SoCon in that category.
Wofford will host Presbyterian on Wednesday at 6 p.m., while UNCG hosts Mercer for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
