SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Robert Herrera has been named the Southern Conference men’s tennis player of the week for all matches played March 27 to April 2, the conference announced Tuesday. ETSU went 3-0 last week, moving to 5-0 in conference play and 11-6 overall.

The Barcelona, Spain, native finished last week unblemished at the No. 1 singles spot, earning a come-from-behind victory over 88th-ranked Luca Keist of Charlotte on March 29 to start the week. Herrera dropped the first set 2-6 before storming back to earn 6-1, 6-4 wins in the second and third sets. Herrera then defeated Wofford’s Lucas Cerbelli 6-4, 6-1 as the Bucs earned the 5-2 conference victory. The senior rounded out the week with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sam Philp of Mercer, who is currently ranked No. 101. With the three wins, Herrera improves his record at the No. 1 spot to 10-5.

In doubles action, Herrera paired with Sergi Fontcuberta to earn a 6-2 win over Charlotte’s No. 2 doubles pair of Benjamin Wayand and Siem Fenne, improving their record to 8-1 this season. Against Wofford, Herrera paired with Miguel Este and dropped a tough 7-5 decision at the flight two doubles before rebounding with a 6-3 win over Mercer’s No. 1 duo Nicolas Guillon and Ruben Vanoppen, evening the pair’s record to 1-1 this year and helped the Bucs down Mercer. The conference loss was the first of the season for the Bears and gave ETSU sole possession of first place in the conference.

ETSU returns to action on April 7 with a SoCon match against in-state foe Chattanooga at 10 a.m.
