SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG infielder Caleb Webster and Wofford left-hander Adam Scott have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games April 16-22. The selections are made by the league office.
Webster recorded multiple hits in three of four games for the Spartans, going 8-for-15 with eight hits, eight RBIs and four runs scored. Against Wake Forest on Tuesday, the sophomore registered two hits, drove in two runs and scored two runs. The Randleman, North Carolina, native picked up a pair of RBIs on two hits against Samford on Friday, helping lift UNCG to a 7-5 victory. On Saturday, Webster was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate, scoring one run while driving in three as the Spartans defeated the Bulldogs 7-2. In the finale on Sunday, Webster recorded a hit and an RBI as UNCG edged out Samford 7-6 to claim the series sweep.
Webster currently ranks sixth in the SoCon with 58 hits while leading the league in sacrifice bunts with 10. In conference games, Webster leads the league with a .422 batting average, recording six of his 10 sacrifice bunts against SoCon opponents.
Scott set the tone for Wofford’s weekend series with The Citadel, tossing seven-shutout innings while striking out nine batters as the Terriers defeated the Bulldogs 5-1. The senior was locked in from the start, giving up no extra-base hits while striking out at least one batter in six of seven innings. A native of Canandaigua, New York, Scott opened the game by fanning two of the first three batters while getting a third batter to ground out. After allowing a hit and recording a wild pitch in the sixth inning, the lefty induced a pair of ground balls and a pop fly to cap off his evening in the seventh, picking up his sixth win of the season.
Scott leads the SoCon in strikeouts (89) and innings pitched (69.1), while holding batters to just a .202 average. In league play, Scott ranks fifth with an earned run average of 1.84, striking out 34 batters.
UNCG does not have a midweek game this week, returning to the diamond on Friday when they travel to Wofford. Before hosting the Spartans for a three-game set, the Terriers travel to Winthrop to take on the Eagles on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
