SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Richmond attackman Ryan Lanchbury and Bellarmine goalkeeper John Hulsman have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition from April 10-16. The awards are selected by the league office.
Richmond’s Lanchbury notched his third hat trick of the season in the Spiders’ 14-12 win over Jacksonville in a battle of first-place SoCon squads. The freshman from Burlington, Ontario, Canada, scored three goals and added two assists for his second game this season of five points or more. Lanchbury scored Richmond’s first goal of the day to even the score at 1 in the first quarter and notched consecutive tallies in the fourth quarter, including the eventual game-winner, to put the Spiders ahead by two after the Dolphins had tied the score at 11. He also assisted on goals in the second and third quarters.
Bellarmine’s Hulsman made 11 saves and allowed just six goals on the day as the Knights picked up their first SoCon win of the season, downing Mercer 12-6 on Saturday. The freshman from Baltimore, Maryland, faced 31 shots on the afternoon and posted a .647 save percentage in earning his second win of the season. Hulsman led a Bellarmine defense that shut out the Bears in the second half, marking the first time since February 2010 that the Knights had blanked an opponent for an entire half. Hulsman, who took over as Bellarmine’s starter on March 2, leads the league in saves per game (13.71) and save percentage (.600) and is second in goals against average (9.02).
Richmond, which is receiving votes in the latest Inside Lacrosse Maverik Media Poll, and Bellarmine are both back in action at noon Saturday, with the Spiders (7-5, 4-1 SoCon) visiting Mercer (4-8, 2-3) and the Knights (3-8, 1-4) at VMI (2-8, 0-5).
