SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Katarina Kozarov has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played April 3-9, the conference announced Tuesday. The Paladins have won their last nine matches after picking up conference wins over Western Carolina and ETSU over the weekend. This is the second weekly award of the season for Kozarov.
The Novi Sad, Serbia, native finished last week 2-0 at flight one singles, starting with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Western Carolina’s Jordan Strickland. On April 6, Kozarov earned a come-from-behind victory over ETSU’s Alory Pereira. After falling behind with a first-set loss, the sophomore rebounded with 6-2 and 6-4 wins to claim the win and help Furman earn the narrow 4-3 victory in Johnson City, Tennessee.
In doubles action, Kozarov paired with Katty Weymouth to defeat Western Carolina’s Strickland and Lauren McCall 6-3. Kozarov’s lone blemish for the week came at the hands of ETSU’s Pereira and Ioanna Markesini, as she and Weymouth fell 6-0 to the Bucs’ top pair.
Furman wraps up the regular season on April 14 with a match against Samford at noon. The Paladins are currently in first place in conference standings with a 6-0 record.
Also nominated: Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (ETSU), Katie Sidor (Mercer) and Nancy Bridges (UNCG).
