SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Connor Thompson has been named the Southern Conference men’s tennis player of the week for all matches played April 3-9, the conference announced Tuesday. This is the third weekly award of the season for Thompson after leading UNCG to a 2-1 last week.

The Atlanta, Georgia, native finished the week with three wins at the No. 1 singles spot, improving his record this season to 14-3. Thompson started the week with a 6-2, 6-3 win over 112th-ranked Sam Philp of Mercer on April 3, a match the Spartans narrowly lost 4-3. Thompson then defeated Coastal Carolina’s Zak Talic in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3. The senior rounded out singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 win over The Citadel’s Matthew Henson as UNCG claimed a 7-0 win over the Bulldogs. With the three victories, Thompson extended his singles match win streak to 11.

In doubles action, Thompson paired with Nico Grewe to defeat Mercer’s top pair of Philp and Oliver Stuart 6-3 and then downed Coastal Carolina’s Luiz Farla and Paul Boulay 6-1 to help UNCG to a 5-2 win. The pair finished off their 3-0 week with a 6-2 win over Noah Hawabi and Gavin Stewart of The Citadel, running the duo’s doubles winning streak to four consecutive matches.

UNCG is back in action April 10 when it travels to Wofford for a 2 p.m. match. The Spartans then wrap up their season with matches on April 11 and 14, including the SoCon finale at Chattanooga at noon.
