UNCG's Thompson named player of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Connor Thompson has been named the Southern Conference men’s tennis player of the week for all matches played March 13-19, the conference announced Tuesday. The Spartans went 2-2 on the week and improved to 1-1 in conference play.

Thompson finished the week unblemished in singles action, going 3-0 at the No. 1 singles spot and improving his singles record to 7-3 for the season. The Atlanta, Georgia, native started the week with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win over Samford’s Justin Ghavami, helping the Spartans to a 6-1 victory and their first SoCon win of the season. Thompson picked up his second win of the week in a thrilling 7-5, 7-6 (4-0) win over Bryant’s Matt Kuhar at the Battle of the Beach in Wilmington, North Carolina. The senior earned his third singles win of the week over host UNCW’s Andres Torres 6-1, 6-1, earning the Spartans’ only point in the 4-1 loss.

Thompson also paired with Ollie Palmer to go 2-1 at the No. 1 doubles spot. The duo fell 6-4 to Samford’s Eduardo Lourido and Jake Faundez to start the week but then picked up back-to-back wins. The first victory came against Oskar Michalek and Mustapha Belcora of Troy, 6-4, and then the pair downed Bryant’s Kuhar and Artur Jakubowski, 6-2.

UNCG returns to the court on March 21 as it travels to Greenville, North Carolina, for a nonconference match against East Carolina at 2:30 p.m.
