SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer outfielder Trey Truitt and Wofford left-hander Adam Scott have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games March 12-18. The selections are made by the league office.
Truitt hit .588 with 14 RBIs and eight runs scored over four games, helping the Bears go undefeated last week. The Dothan, Alabama, native got off to a strong start on Tuesday, smacking a home run, driving in three runs and stealing a base in the 11-8 Mercer victory over Georgia Southern. After going 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the series-opener against Eastern Kentucky on Friday, Truitt went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBIs on Saturday. The senior capped off his impressive week with a pair of hits, two RBIs and a stolen base as the Bears edged the Colonels 5-4 on Sunday.
Truitt currently ranks third in the conference in batting average (.427) and slugging percentage (.800), while leading the league in runs scored (28) and home runs (seven). For his efforts, Truitt was also named one of Collegiate Baseball's national players of the week.
Scott shut down Siena on Saturday, striking out six batters over seven innings, allowing zero earned runs en route to a 10-4 victory for Wofford. Scott, who is 3-1 on the season, did not allow a free pass as the Terriers cruised to their sixth straight win.
A native of Canandaigui, New York, Scott leads the SoCon with 45 strikeouts and ranks second with 32 innings pitched.
Mercer, which leads the SoCon in overall wins with16, travels to Georgia Tech for a midweek game starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Wofford, which has won 11 of 12 games, hosts Gardner-Webb on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
