ETSU picks up first conference victory

MACON, Ga. –  The ETSU women’s tennis team played their fourth straight match on the road and picked up a 5-2 win against the Mercer Bears. The Bucs improve to 5-9 and 1-1, as Mercer drops to 7-7 and 0-1.

It was a perfect sweep for the Bucs to start things off in doubles play. Seniors Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) and Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) started things off with a 6-0 win over Grace Korta and Celine Schepers. Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) and Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) defeated Lucia Gutierrez and Marie Mottet 6-4 to clinch the doubles point. Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) and Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) won 7-6 against Katie Sidor and Aanna Sovic to complete the doubles sweep.

Mercer’s Grace Korta evened the match after she defeated Alejandra Morales 7-6, 6-1. Yi Chi Ma helped the Bucs get a lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Anna Sovic. Three consecutive wins came from ETSU’s seniors. Ioanna Markesini defeated Celine Schepers 6-2, 7-5, while Alory Pereira won 7-6, 6-3 against Katie Sidor to clinch the overall match for the Bucs. Melissa Esguerra gave the Bucs their last point of the match. Esguerra fought back to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The Bucs will play their third conference match this Sunday, March. 18 at UNCG. The match is set for 1:00 p.m.
