Gipson-Long named Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer baseball player Sawyer Gipson-Long has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held March 7-13, the league office announced Wednesday.

A sophomore from Woodstock, Georgia, Gipson-Long threw a complete-game, one-hitter as Mercer defeated Savannah State 10-1 on Wednesday. The right-hander took a no-hitter into the ninth inning where it was eventually broken up by the Tigers. Gipson-Long struck out a career-high 10 batters, giving up just one unearned run and improving to 2-0 overall on the year.  

Gipson-Long is a chemical commerce major with a 3.709 grade point average.

The Bears, who sit at 12-5 overall, host Georgia Southern on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
