SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Holly Horsfall has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Jan. 13 through Feb. 5, the conference announced Tuesday. Horsfall started the season 3-0 at the No. 3 spot and was 3-1 in doubles with partner Elsa Pool. Overall the Bulldogs are off to a 3-1 start with their lone loss coming at Mississippi State.

Horsfall started her sophomore campaign with two straight victories at the No. 3 spot and then earned her third win of the season at the No. 4 spot as she did not drop a set against Alabama-Huntsville. The sophomore won all her matches in straight sets, posting wins over Kennesaw State’s Jessica Cantrell (6-4, 6-3), Belmont’s Erin Allen (6-0, 6-2) and UAH’s Marliene van Been (6-0, 6-0).  Horsfall was leading her matchup against Mississippi State’s Magda Adaloglou when the match was finished.

In doubles action, the No. 2 doubles pair reeled off three straight wins as the duo dropped just two games in those three matches. Their first loss of the season came to Mississippi State’s Adaloglou and Janina Braun, 3-6.

Samford is back in action on Feb. 7 when the Bulldogs host crosstown foe UAB at 3 p.m.

Also nominated: Katarina Kozarov (Furman), Marie Mottet (Mercer), Sophia Adams (UNCG), Emma Van Hee (Chattanooga) and Jordan Strickland (Western Carolina).
