Samford falls at Vanderbilt in Friday night action

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Samford women's basketball team dropped a 77-52 decision at Vanderbilt Friday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 4-10 on the season. Vanderbilt improves to 5-8 with the win.
 
FROM THE BOX SCORE

  • Samford was led in the game by Ta'Naisha Hill with 14 points.
  • Paige Serup had seven points and a team-high six rebounds for the Bulldogs.
  • Vanderbilt was led by Mariella Fasoula with 26 points.
  • Autumn Newby and Lealea Carter contributed 11 points each for the Commodores.

 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Vanderbilt got off to a fast start, scoring the first 12 points of the contest.
  • Samford cut the lead to eight points at 12-4 after a layup by Hill with 3:39 left in the first quarter.
  • With Samford trailing, 14-6, Vanderbilt scored the final four points of the first quarter to end the period with an 18-6 lead.
  • In the second quarter, with Vanderbilt leading 27-16, the Commodores closed the period with a 7-0 run to push their lead to 34-16 at halftime.
  • Vanderbilt pushed its lead to as many as 30 points at 56-26 with 1:45 left in the third period.
  • At the end of the third quarter, the Commodores held a 58-33 advantage.
  • Samford cut the lead to 21 points at 63-42 with 7:07 to go after a layup by Raven Omar.
  • The Bulldogs, however, could get no closer and Vanderbilt closed out the 77-52 win.

  • Samford will play host to Montevallo on Jan. 8, for the team's first home game since Dec. 5. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
