SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State’s Michael Elliott has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Dec. 12-18, the league office announced Wednesday.
The Jefferson, North Carolina, native picked up a 5-4 decision win over Oklahoma’s Jeremy Thomas on Sunday. The senior 165-pounder had 26 seconds of riding time on his side when he erased a 4-2 deficit on a takedown in the final minute of the third period. From that position, he was able to remain atop Thomas and get an additional point by pushing his riding time over a minute.
The win gives Elliott a 13-6 overall season record, a 2-1 season dual record and a 23-18 all-time record at Appalachian State. The win also put him at a team-leading 13 wins this season.
The Mountaineers will return to the mat on Jan. 1-2 as they travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee, to compete in the Southern Scuffle.
