SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford junior guard Josh Sharkey was named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests from Nov. 6-12 after averaging 17.3 points and 9.0 assists per game in helping the Bulldogs go 3-0 over the first week of the season. The award is selected by the league office.

Sharkey opened his season with 18 points, seven assists and six rebounds in a 91-74 win over North Alabama on Nov. 6, going 7-for-9 from the floor. Three days later in a 92-72 win over Jacksonville State, the Philadelphia native fell two steals shy of a triple-double, scoring 22 points to go along with a career-best 10 assists, a career-best eight steals and five rebounds.

On Monday night in a 74-60 win over Kennesaw State, Sharkey had 12 points and added 10 assists – without a turnover – for his second straight double-double. He also pulled down six rebounds.

For the week, Sharkey shot 63.0 percent from the floor, going 17-for-27, including a 3-for-5 effort from beyond the 3-point arc. He averaged 5.7 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game and had 27 assists against just 12 turnovers, good for a 2.3 ratio. Sharkey was 15-for-19 from the free-throw line (.789).

Samford’s 3-0 start is its first since the 2007-08 campaign. The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday when they wrap a season-opening four-game homestand against Miles College.
